  1. I wonder how the bridge troll legend started? Could it have something to do with real-life bandits who would accost people trying to cross bridges?

      Scandinavian troll stories/legends go back possibly as far as the bronze age, so they may have historical roots with the Anglo-Saxons occupation of England. That may have been reinforced by the Viking day trippers of the early 8th century.
      Most people have known them from the Norwegian tale of the Billy goats gruff, a bridge rather than just a water crossing being introduced.
