Listening to some Philip Glass while reading Naguib Mahfouz’s trilogy of colonial Egypt – The Cairo Trilogy: Palace Walk, Palace of Desire, Sugar Street. The books take you through the history of Cairo at the start of the 20th century, using the trials and tribulations experienced by three generations of the same family.
One can see why he was given the 1988 Nobel Prize for literature.

I studied these works at college..so beautiful, Glassworks is like drifting down a dark stream in the moonlight..
Quintessentially Glass: Although I understand he wrote it with the idea that it would appeal to a wider audience.
Minimalists like Steve Reich (apparently the linking is contentious) but for my part, I came to appreciate both after listening to Arvo Pärt and Sir John Tavener; a circuitous route I know.
