Because there was very little light and I did not want flash giving me odd shadows & if you could see the trek getting there; I was not going to struggle with a tripod.
Also when printing, it gives me a granularity that reinforces the abandoned feeling of the place. Print 6×4 or thereabouts, at least a stop darked than normal and mounted with a large mat board.

Just curious, are you pushing to 1600 because of the light levels, or to bump contrast?
