The country was always isolated from the rest of the world in some ways upto the early 1970’s, which has helped preserve a lot of history. Other than early explorers, most (not all) of the locals were not interested for one reason or another. It is only since the 1970’s that the depth of history has started being appreciated.
Although for how much longer I cannot say; modernity & tourism are already beginning to take its toll.
